Facilities maintenance grown increasingly green in past five years

As a part of routine maintenance management programs, facilities regularly use large amounts of heavy-duty cleaning equipment and solutions.

Retail stores, hospitals, manufacturing plants and other large facilities all depend on these chemicals to run a clean operation, and still must comply with EPA maintenance. This wasn't always the case, however, with many firms even five years ago using products and machinery that not only were inefficient, but harmful to the environmental.

But as technology has progressed in the past five years, new options have become available for facilities that have reinforced the growing green trend among industrial cleaning solutions, Safety BLR reports.

According to the news source, several environmental mandates have been introduced in the last half decade, including Executive Orders 13101 and 13148, which make federal agencies and thousands of organizations around the country more accountable for their actions. Measures that were passed in the mid-2000s, such as Washington State's move to create laws governing the design, operations and maintenance of buildings, have had a huge impact on on how manufacturing companies operate today.

"Green cleaning innovations have expanded beyond harmful chemicals to include processes and equipment, and there are developments in air filtration systems, chemical-free cleaning systems, low-moisture floor cleaners, and a range of chemical dilution systems," wrote Stephanie Thomas, of Team Cleaning Solutions. "Right now, the cleaning industry employs over 3.5 million people, and every year it uses around 6 billion pounds of chemicals. That is a lot of people and a lot of cleaning materials coming together to create a huge impact on the environment."

Thomas added that this has also led to the development of many government and private sector initiatives that help create a more consistent legislation process.

According to the media outlet, the advancements that have been made in green cleaning solutions have helped businesses improve their productivity, profitability, performance and morale.

The Environmental Protection Agency has created a document for Environmentally Preferable Purchasing techniques when it comes to buying cleaning solutions and equipment, which helps businesses comply with EPA standards.
